Wigdor LLP currently represents three individuals in a civil lawsuit filed against Matthew Lodge, an Australian professional rugby league player. The firm filed a lawsuit on behalf of the three individuals on December 21, 2015 in the Southern District of New York. Lodge, a 6’4”, 240-pound menacing figure, stumbled upon two young women on vacation in New York City when they took a cab back to the building where they were staying with a friend. Lodge grabbed, threatened and stalked the women and then forced his way into the foyer of the building as they attempted to escape, telling them, “This is the night you die.” Lodge went on to brutally attack Joseph Cartright, a resident of the building who intervened, by punching him in the head repeatedly and invading Mr. Cartright’s home, where his wife and child were hiding. In addition to injunctive relief against Lodge, the Plaintiff’s seek an award of monetary damages for their economic and emotional harm, in addition to punitive damages. Lodge has failed to respond to the lawsuit, and a motion for default judgment and inquest on damages, in which the Plaintiffs request relief in excess of $1 million, is currently pending before the Court.
